Background
The Pelton wheel
Lester Allan Pelton went to California during the Gold Rush. For placer mining on small streams he designed a water wheel; the first Pelton wheel was installed at the Mayflower Mine in Nevada City in 1878, and he received his patent on 26 October 1880. By 1900 more than 11,000 turbines were in use.
Jets of water hit spoon-shaped buckets on the rim and are turned around, which drives the wheel. Usually two buckets sit side by side so that the jet splits in two. The design suits high head and low flow, and is still favoured for hydroelectric plants with a high head.
Our wheel has a diameter of about 40 mm, which is about 3.5 m at 1:87, with 18 pairs of buckets. It stands upright on a symmetrical steel A-frame with wooden bearing blocks. It is a free industrial interpretation, not a replica of a specific turbine.
